A case study of the parent-child interaction play therapy program for the ADHD children

Abstract
This study was performed to examine whether the parent-child interaction play therapy programs for the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder children and their parents can change the behaviors of the parents and the children. The research problems were examining the changes of the interactions between the parent and child. The parent-child interaction play therapy program allows the parents and the children to participate in the play therapy sessions to create a positive interaction and also allows the parents to learn the parenting techniques. The parent-child interaction responses were analyzed by 2 observers through the video recordings using the items from Korean Maternal Behavior Rating Scale (K-MBRS) and Korean Child Behavior Rating Scale (K-CBRS). The study results can be shown as the following: First, the verbal praise, acceptance, enjoyment, and effectiveness behaviors increased after the program m the parents` response than before and the achievement-oriented and the directive behaviors decreased. Second, The children`s response showed that the persistence, cooperative, joint attention and interest behaviors increased after the program. Third, The parent-child interaction response behaviors showed that the parents` responsibility and the effectiveness increased while the directivity decreased and the children showed increased active behaviors and social behaviors. Therefore, The parent-child interaction play therapy program changed the negative interaction with the parents to the ADHD of the children into a more positive and effective parenting to recover the confidence of the parent and also positively improved the interaction with ADHD children.
